Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, or larger text. This page explains how accessible it is and how to tell us about a problem.

This statement applies to counciltaxhelpline.co.uk. The website is run by Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, trading as Council Tax Helpline.

How easy is it to use?

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard most UK public services use. The site is designed so that you can:

  • Zoom in up to 400% without text spilling off the screen
  • Use it on a phone, where most people read it, as easily as on a computer
  • Move around it using only a keyboard, with a clear yellow highlight showing where you are
  • Skip straight to the main content with the “Skip to main content” link at the top of every page
  • Use it with a screen reader, with proper headings, labelled form fields, and descriptions for diagrams
  • Read it without relying on colour: links are underlined, and colour is never the only way information is shown

We write in plain English, explain legal terms when we use them, and keep sentences short. The online check asks one question at a time.

Known limitations

We know some parts of the site are not yet as accessible as we would like:

  • Some wide tables scroll sideways on small screens, rather than fitting the screen
  • The calculators and quick checks in some guides need JavaScript. The same information is always given in the text around them
  • The online check needs JavaScript. If it is turned off, the page tells you to call us instead
  • Links to other websites, such as GOV.UK or your council, go to pages we do not control

If you need information in a different way

If you need something on this website in a different format, or you find it hard to use the online check, call us free on 0800 494 7285, Monday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm. An adviser can go through the questions with you on the phone.

If you use a text relay service, you can call us through Relay UK by dialling 18001 followed by our number.

Reporting a problem

If you find a problem that is not listed here, or you think we are not meeting the standard, please tell us. Call us, or write to us at Council Tax Helpline, Sentinel House, Ancells Business Park, Harvest Crescent, Fleet, Hampshire, GU51 2UZ. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and what went wrong.

How we check

Pages are checked at phone and computer screen sizes as they are built. We have not yet had the site independently audited against WCAG 2.2, and we will update this statement when we do. We review it whenever we make significant changes to the site.
